Getting the Marriage Cake that you have always wanted
by admin ~ June 5th, 2009. Filed under: Weddings. The marriage cake is the very first thing your guests notice when they walk into the Reception hall. The cake sets the tone of the marriage as formal or informal. Marriage cakes gave good luck to the newlyweds, and passing out pieces of cake was a method of sharing that luck with chums and neighbors. However, your marriage cake can be any shape or style you wish. I have seen all sorts of cakes used for marriage cakes, from multi-tiered heart formed cakes with many smaller hearts on pedestals attached to the main tower by cascading ribbons, and plastic bridges.
I also know a pair who met at a hockey game. Their marriage cake was a sheet cake decorated to appear like a hockey arena. Manifestly it appeared to be an extremely informal marriage. A sheet cake can be embellished with class, for an informal wedding. It’s your marriage, you may have any sort of cake you need.
Most brides show up for the first meeting with a cake designer / decorator, with an image in her head of the ideal marriage cake, that she could have dreamed about since childhood. The designer will do everything in their power to bring that image into fact. Go to the meeting with a rough number of guests, your color palette, a sketch however primitive of what you need your cake to appear like and presumably a picture from a mag that is close to what you need the cake to look like. The designer will also need to know what flavour you need the cake and topping to be. They may have samples for you to sample. If you would like a formal marriage but still need to add a hint of caprice have fun with the grooms cake. The marriage cake can be as chic as you need, but have the groom’s cake reflect something about the groom, his hobbies, job for example.
Does he like Nascar? Have a race car, the options are limitless. If another special family occasion is similar day as your marriage, try and recognize it some way. A chum of mine got married on her father-in-law’s birthday, so she had the top layer of her marriage cake decorated as a birthday cake for him. He was so delighted. All these sorts of things have to be debated with the cake designer, well ahead of the day. You can get marriage cakes at most bakeries, but I’d suggest on the lookout for one whose specialty is wedding cakes. You do not have to restrict yourself to the conventional cake.
